About the Dance:
This event is truly like no other, as it adapts to the level of the dancers. We’ve achieved this by splitting the dance into two parts: the first half welcomes beginners and makes it easy to bring friends and family along. If you’ve never tried square dancing before, this is the perfect time to start! In addition, to keep things fresh and exciting for all dancers each month, the caller has the freedom to teach anything from Basic through Challenge. Click here for a full list of calls, their definitions, and animations showing how they work.
The last half is for experienced dancers. Depending on how many dancers there are, we go between Mainstream and Plus level tips using DBD (Dance by Definition). It’s a chance for the caller to show us what they can do and for you to experience the possibilities of square dancing. If you thought you’ve seen it all before, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
Always remember that square dance is about having fun, laughing at our mistakes, and making friends along the way. It’s a team sport that relies on working together, staying patient, and helping those around you. Don’t forget that everyone starts at the beginning and if you keep coming back, it’ll get easier each time. We’ll see you on the dance floor!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Will there be other kinds of dances, such as round or line dancing?
A: Starting in January, we’re incorporating line dancing in between square dance tips. Which will be taught by Kyle Quande.
Q: Do I need to pay if I just watch or can only make it to part of the dance?
A: Yes. There is a $5 entry fee, which goes toward renting the hall and paying for callers. Any additional donations help support our teen club and future supplies.
Q: What are the age limits?
A: Square dancing heavily relies on listening to the caller and being respectful of others in a group environment. That age is different for everyone, and we trust you to make your best judgement.
Q: Do I need to wear my nametag if I have my own?
A: Yes. We ask that everyone wear their nametag because of the color coding.
Q: How can I contact Square Roots for questions, suggestions, or caller requests?
A: If you want to call for our event or know someone who might, you can contact us at: info@jacksandjills.org
