Exercise the Mind, Body, and Soul
If you’re looking for something new to do and want to create amazing memories and friends along the way, consider Square Dancing! It’s a fun, social activity that keeps you moving and smiling. Today’s square dancing is much different than what you might have experienced in a high school PE class—it’s modern, upbeat, and a perfect activity for all ages. So come on out, give it a try, and get ready to have a blast!
Not convinced?? Check out this video! It’s the most compelling testimony we know of.
Square dancing focuses on FUN, not artistry!
If you’ve never tried square dancing because you think you have two left feet, don’t worry. Fancy footwork is not required! Being superbly graceful, is not a requirement. If you can walk, you can square dance!
You will quickly discover that square dancing is:
- Fun! Lots of smiles and laughter.
- Healthy… both physically and mentally.
- Friendly… people of all ages and backgrounds can do it.
- Easy on the wallet. (snacks are usually provided)
- Something you can go to forever… even if you stop dancing.
Modern Square Dancing:
Square dance music isn’t just country anymore—it includes everything from pop and rock to folk and even rap!
Western attire is an option, NOT a requirement. Casual clothing is normal when taking lessons and attending dances in the modern era.
Singles are welcome… even though a “square” of dancers involves 4 couples, it is NOT necessary for you to come with a dance partner. There are plenty of other singles to dance with!
Square dancing all around the world falls into five levels of dance. The levels start at Basic (B), go through Mainstream (MS), Plus (P), and Advanced (A), then end at Challenge (C). The standard level that most people dance at is called Mainstream, which includes everything in Basic and Mainstream levels. If you want to learn more about these levels, you can visit the Taminations website or mobile app which has a list of every square dance call, along with lots of other interesting tools and resources.

More Details About Our Lessons:
- The full lesson set consists of 16 classes: 12 focused on teaching the fundamentals, followed by 4 more that help new dancers confidently dance just about anywhere in Washington state (or in the country, for that matter). Realistically, new dancers should expect to complete the full program in just 12-16 weeks.
- *Weekly attendance is critical to success! Commit early to not missing a lesson, and if you must miss one, plan to attend another class to stay on track.
- Each class lasts around 2 hours and is led by a live professional caller/instructor.
- You’ll actually be dancing within the first 30 minutes of Lesson #1.
- Casual attire. Comfortable shoes are recommended!
- If you have any questions about a club’s lessons, please contact the number or email to find out more.
What Happens After?
Joining a Club:
While joining a club isn’t required before or during lessons, it’s highly encouraged once you’ve completed the program. Square dance clubs are the heart of the square dance community, bringing people together to dance, socialize, and continue learning in a fun and welcoming environment.
Clubs meet at different times and in different locations, making it easier to find one that fits your schedule. Each club also has its own personality, flair, style, and community, hosting special themed dances and events throughout the year. No matter which club you choose, you’ll find a supportive group of dancers who share your enthusiasm!
Joining a club is the best way to keep dancing, build lasting friendships, and be part of a community that keeps the tradition alive. If you want to see a list of clubs under the Rainier Council, click here!
Graduating:
After you complete the lessons, Rainier Council holds a special graduation dance for all new students and current dancers!
Congratulations to our graduated dancers of Fall Class 2024!
